A Holiday Treat: Candy Cane Pie

So this recipe makes 2 Pies! One for you and one for…ok fine, you can have both 🙂 Or in my case…62 mini pies. My darling daughter requested these for her 4th grade holiday party. I happily obliged and not only did i have enough for her class, there was plenty left over to give out to friends and family (and then for me to steal a couple as well). I did them in foil cupcake liners as these seemed like the strongest material. Give yourself plenty of time (and some wine) especially if you have little bakers in the kitchen helping. Enjoy!

Ingredients & Layers

Layer 1: Oreo Crust

About 50 chocolate creme sandwich cookies (makes about 2 cups crumbs)

1 cup butter, melted

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place cookies in a food processor and process until they’re fine crumbs.

2. Add melted butter to food processor and process again, just until combined.

3. Pour butter and crumbs into a 9-inch baking dish and spread evenly.

4. Pack down with a flat bottomed glass. Refrigerate crust for an hour before filling.

Layer 2: Chocolate Filling

3 eggs

2 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3/4 cup sugar

4 ounces baking semi-sweet chocolate

12 tablespoons butter, room temperature

1 cup heavy whipping cream

INSTRUCTIONS

1. With an electric mixer using a whisk attachment, beat heavy cream until soft peaks appear. Place in a bowl and refrigerate until ready to use.

2.  Melt baking chocolate in a microwave-safe container for one minute on high. Stir and heat the chocolate again for 30 seconds. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted. Set aside to cool.

3.  With an electric mixer, whisk together the eggs, vanilla extract, and milk. Whisk for 5 minutes. Place egg mixture in a heatproof glass bowl. Over low heat, place bowl over a medium saucepan filled with 1/2 inch of barely simmering water.

4.  Stir the eggs occasionally until they reach 160 degrees F with an instant read thermometer.

5.  Place eggs back in the electric mixer and whisk for 8 minutes. Set aside.

6.  In the same electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

7.  Slowly pour in the cooled semi-sweet chocolate and the eggs. Beat until well combined.

8.  Carefully fold in the chilled heavy whipping cream until well blended.

9.  Pour the filling into a 6 inch ready made oreo crust. Cover with saran wrap and refrigerate.

Layer 3: Peppermint Vanilla Ice Cream Pudding

1 Package Vanilla Pudding Mix

Milk

1 Cup Vanilla Ice Cream

5-10 Drops Peppermint Syrup

INSTRUCTIONS

Vanilla Pudding (using the directions on box for amount of milk).  I subtract about 1/4 cup of milk and use a cup of (good, creamy, yum) vanilla ice cream in the pudding mix.  Once I have my pudding mixed I put in peppermint drops.  You’d be surprised how little you need.  I usually do about 5-10 drops, but to taste. If too much, put in a little more ice cream.  If too little, plop a few more drops in.  Once tasty, it’s done. Add in layer and refrigerate.

Layer 4: Whipped Cream

1. 1 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream

2. 1-3 tbs Confectioners Sugar

3. 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract (more to taste)

In a mixer, whip cream until stiff peaks are just about to form. Beat in vanilla and sugar until peaks form. Make sure not to over-beat, cream will then become lumpy and butter-like.

Layer 5: Candycane Sprinkles

5 Candycanes-Smashed to sprinkle size 🙂

Freeze or refrigerate till ready to serve!

Preventative Maintenance: How to keep lines and wrinkles from forming!

They say anything you did before 25 was a free pass. Ok that may be an exaggeration. But up until your mid twenties, your skin is in its prime! Under 25? Live it up! Over 25? Time to listen up! As we age, the collagen and elastin decrease. Causes? Damage from the sun, pollutants, poor diet, smoking (please quit now!!!) and alcohol consumption (no champagne…how will we survive!?!). These all cause wrinkles and an uneven texture. Also starting in your early thirties, collagen production slows down and the type of collagen you produce is far less effective. The enzymes in your skin that are in charge of cleaning up damaged collagen fibers continue to breakdown old collagen. But the problems is that the new collagen fiber production can’t quite keep up. The result? Aging skin, fine lines, wrinkles and loss of tone (say it isn’t so!!!)

But were not just here to give you all bad news. We have some tips for you!

Protein! Lack of protein ages the skin more visibly. We recommend eating an adequate amount of protein rich foods for getting the nutrients you need to produce new collagen fibers. The amino acids that make up proteins are what the fibers are made up of! So time to load up on fish, poultry, lean meats and eggs!

Vitamin C! Next step? Converting the amino acids into a usable form of protein to make the collagen fibers. This is the job of a diet rich in vitamin C!

Antioxidants! Fruits and veggies are important to protect your cells from free radical damage that leads to aging.

Stimulating Collagen! How do we do that??? Vitamin C applied topically not only has a positive effect on collagen production, it also helps fade brown spots and pigmentation.

Chemical Peels! A spotless, lineless, flawless complexion is lying just beneath the surface of your skin. During a peel, the acids lift away dead skin cells and trigger a reaction. Once the top layer begins to shed, signals are sent to the living cells below to multiply and move on up and begin increasing collagen production! A thorough sloughing also offers one very immediate upshot: smoother skin that’s both more radiant and more receptive. As for all the benefits of a peel, and the many different kinds, check back soon as we will go more in depth in another blog!

Clarisonic: Helpful or Harmful?

Lets start off. For those of you who are new to the skincare game, or who have been living under a beauty rock, the Clarisonic is a tool sold at specialty beauty stores, spas (including Facialworks) and online. It oscillates back and forth over the skin. Its claim: ‘to remove six times more makeup than cleansing by hand” However, I like to think of it as an exfoliating tool to lift off dry skin cells and remove makeup.

At Facialworks, we love the Clarisonic! We use this tool in our facials and see all the benefits it has, when used the right way!

If you’re considering purchasing one, here are some facts to help you decide!

Fact 1: Skin Trauma: Sometimes a good thing!

You never want to exfoliate to the point of destroying healthy, living cells. However, when you give the skin trauma, it then goes into repair mode and stimulates cellular regeneration. This is extremely beneficial to the skin! But doing so too often by over-exfoliating can trigger premature aging and cause radical damage. So use with care, caution and by the direction of your esthetician by the recommendation for your specific skin type!

Fact 2: Clean Skin is good…But not too clean!

I know, this sounds a little crazy. But here is the deal. Although you do want your skin hygienically clean, it doesn’t need to be eat off the kitchen floor spotless! There is a certain amount of good bacteria that your skin needs to continue functioning in a healthy way. So we recommend using non-drying, sulfate free cleansers with your Clarisonic!

Fact 3: Dryness…and how keep it from happening!

Being too aggressive in your exfoliating can cause extreme dryness and disrupt the skins lipid barrier. This is what allows the moisture to seep out of the cells easily. We recommend our new Barrier Repair in our Hydra Works line…if you’re over exfoliating. For added moisture, the Organic Super Serum and the Clear Moisture are also great options!

Do not forget that in order to get best results from your Clarisonic and avoid over-exfoliating, over-cleaning, inflammation and the spread of bacteria, be sure to only use you Clarisonic a 2-3 times a week and to wash it with anti-bacterial soap BEFORE each use.

Beauty & Bellini’s: Our First Network Blogging Event

This past Sunday we closed down Facialworks for a wonderful and extremely fun event. Being in the skincare industry, we work with so many beauty and lifestyle bloggers. Not to mention, design, family, travel and just women with wonderful style who want to share their lives. So as a thank you, we wanted to invite them all for a day of pampering!

Mendocino Farms catered our event, and the food was nothing short of delicious. The two favorites were the Chilli Rubbed Chicken Skewers and the Curried Couscous.

We had two of our own estheticians Mallory and Natalie doing mini oxygen facials. For everyone who hadn’t had one yet, they were shocked by how amazing their skin felt. For our facial veterans, they were so happy to be able to come in give their skin some much-needed attention.

We invited Jessica from Sunless Rae to come in and do her custom organic airbrush tans and everyone left the party with a beautiful bohemian glow.

Veronica Fensel came in and set up a mini makeover station and glammed up as many girls as she could.

Whitney St. Clair from Blown Away Blow Out Bar in Laguna Niguel sent two of her gorgeous stylists Casey & Rachel to come do hair. The curls, braids and styles these girls did was nothing short of beautiful.

Beauty is pain right? Well on that note, we invited Lunch Box Waxing to come on over and assist with the less than glamorous part of our routines and the ladies left with the most perfectly shaped brows.

And last but not least, ET Chiropractic’s. Because who has ever said no to a massage?

Thank you to all of our vendors who contributed their services and to our wonderful staff who helped run the event!

Fact or Fiction: Straws cause wrinkles.

18057527 - beautiful brunette woman drinking cocktailIts 6am, my alarm goes off. I quietly sneak downstairs while everyone is still sleeping so I can begin my morning ritual. My coffee, iced as always. With french vanilla creamer (gasp, the sugar!). And it wouldn’t be complete without the straw.

The straw. I’m here to admit I’m a slave to it. Drinking from a cup without one just doesn’t offer the same satisfaction (unless it’s a shot glass filled with tequila, but that’s another story). As a woman who just recently turned 30, I am starting to see the beginning signs of aging. And as a frequent straw user, this is starting to scare me. I come from a family of smokers (thank goodness I made it out without the awful habit). And I always saw the gorgeous women I knew who had lit up as frequently as they possibly could, with the dreaded smokers lines surrounding their beautiful lips.

So here is the official answer: Put down the straw!!!

The movement a persons makes while they are using a straw is the same movement made by someone smoking that dreaded cigarette. And that movement will cause the collagen and elasticity to break down causing unnecessary lines and wrinkles. And water bottles are another offender, causing the same outcome.

The truth, although extremely inconvenient, will help you make better decisions. It is far easier (and less expensive) to prevent wrinkles from forming, than to try and get rid of them once they appear!

Saunas: Good for healthy skin?

35346900 - sauna backgroudSaunas have always been promoted as a great way to detoxify your body and skin. But recently, there has been some reports that it is harmful to ones overall health. Lets weigh it out here!

PRO: Saunas relax, and distress you (yes please!) Stress, although some claim is invisible, is the ultimate enemy to overall health! Taking 30 minutes in a hot sauna can relax your mind, body (and soul) just melting your stress away!

CON: Overheating: The intense heat inside a sauna can raise your body temperature to unhealthy levels. Doctors recommend never to exceed 30 minutes!

PRO: Circulation! While you’re in the sauna, your pulse rate jumps by more than 30% allowing the heart to nearly double the amount of blood it pumps each minute (impressive!) And most of the extra blood flow is directed to your skin.

CON: The circulation is directed away from the vital organs. Additionally, although blood pressure changes vary by person, rising in some people but falling in others.

PRO: Saunas provide natural cleansing. The increased sweating is a simple acceleration of your body’s natural mechanism for getting rid of impurities.

CON: Over drying: Heat dries out your skin and your body’s natural reaction to dry skin? Create more oil. This can cause (is some) breakouts and/or dry patches.

Tips for a healthy sauna experience:

1. Do not use when ill

2. Do not stay in longer than 30 minutes

3. Drink 2-4 glasses of water after

4. Avoid alcohol and medications that impair sweating

Our favorite place to get our sweat on??? Perspire Sauna Studio in Newport Beach!
