Post Thanksgiving Beauty Recovery

Over-indulging at Thanksgiving is common, but it can cause a whole host of issues inside and out. To combat the excesses of the holiday season, all you need is a simple detoxifying and reinvigorating regimen that combines exfoliation, inflammation reduction and brightening to support the skin‘s natural ability to restore itself. Here are a few great treatments to help you recover from those over-indulgences.

Exfoliate:
Choose products that include sugar and fruit enzymes–these ingredients clean deep down into the skin, decongest pores and remove dead skin cells to reveal skin’s inner radiance.

Reduce Inflammation:
To reduce inflammation or congestion, choose powerful, effective active ingredients such as salicylic acid from white willow bark and chamomile.

Brighten:
Look for brightening, tone-evening actives like licorice root, lemon peel and arbutin, which significantly reduce discoloration and spots for a brighter, more even complexion.

De-Stress:
There’s nothing more important than keeping your skin and body protected from the stress the holidays can bring. Antioxidants work to reduce that oxidation process and speed cellular repair. There are many trendy antioxidants out there, but my favorites come from the vitamin world. Green tea & resveratrol (potent grape seed extract)–both of which contain phyto-nutrients, flavonoids and polyphenols–are proven antioxidants that restore balance and youth to both your body and skin. polyphenols–are proven antioxidants that restore balance

Hydrate:
Thanksgiving break also brings about the onset of a colder, dryer, harsher climate. A dry epidermis can become annoyingly itchy and painful, not to mention the fact that we all want to look dewy and youthful, not dry and brittle! Keeping hydrated from the inside out is crucial. Drink lots of water and take good fats like flax, fish oils and quality olive oil. In addition, use moisturizers full of high quality, absorbable oils and humectants (like vegetable glycerin or honey) that help your skin absorb and retain water efficiently. For the body, organic apricot kernel oil and shea and cocoa butters will prepare your skin for the harsh weather to come.

Cleansers…Not all are created equal!

25391471 - beautiful woman refreshing her face with water on whiteAs an esthetician, I have heard a lot of interesting answers to the same question: “What do you use to cleanse your skin?” From a bar of soap (cringe), to apricot scrub (double cringe), to coconut oil, to last but certainly not least, Cetaphil. Of course, Cetaphil is ‘Dermatologist Recommended,” it must be good for your skin right? The answer may not be what you thought it would be.

In order to ensure you are using a great cleanser you must first read what the ingredients are. Cetaphil is one that claims to be suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin, since it is very gentle. So let’s take a look at what is really in this cleanser:

Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Laurel Sulfate, Stearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben

Only 8 ingredients, must be good right? Well, let’s take a deeper look.
First ingredient is water, ok, off to a good start. Propylene glycol is used as a humectant to draw moisture to the skin which is good, however it also allows chemicals to penetrate into the skin and into the blood stream. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a foaming agent that disturbs our skin’s natural hydrolipidic barrier, which can cause dehydration and dryness. Parabens are preservatives that have been removed from most professional skin care lines due to their potential health risk.

So if all of these toxic ingredients are wrapped up in this ‘gentle cleanser,’ why is it being recommended by your dermatologist? Most likely because the manufacturer, Galderma, also makes prescription acne medications such as Differin.

If you are freaking out right now that you have been using this cleanser for years, don’t worry, you are not alone. The thing is, for most women this cleanser seems to work for them. However, the truth is, all of the wonderful ingredients us skin care professionals look for, are lacking from this cleanser. I do not see one antioxidant to help remove all those free radicals we walk around in daily, not one plant oil with plenty of omegas that help protect that very important hydrolopidic layer, and not one botanical to help soothe and calm the skin.

By now, you will probably want to be replacing that Cetaphil, as you should! A great cleanser is crucial to any effective skin care routine. That cleanser is what is removing all of the dirt and pollution that our skin comes in contact with daily. As well as removing any excess sebum. It creates a clean canvas on which our exfoliators, toners, serums, and moisturizers can reach their full potential.

Things to look for in a great cleanser are easy! First and foremost, what is your skin type? Do you want that rich cleanser that will keep your dry skin super hydrated or do you want that oil-removing cleanser that will fight your breakouts? Next up, always look for antioxidants (vitamin a & c are my fav) that will help fight free radical damage from the pollution we walk around in just by going outside. Also, plant oils are rich in omegas that will help to keep the skin’s hydrolipidic layer intact. This will help all of your other products to penetrate the skin deeper, making them work better. Lastly, make sure there are some calming ingredients to soothe the skin and reduce inflammation, such as aloe and cucumber.

My favorite cleanser? Facialworks Antiox Cleanser 🙂

Guide to my Greek Yogurt Obsession

Greek yogurt has always been around, but has gained serious popularity in recent years. However, for me, this trend is definitely not just a fad. To me, greek yogurt is a miracle food! here are three amazing reason to always have some in your fridge.

43327732 - serving of yogurt with whole fresh blueberries and oatmeal on old rustic wooden table

Number 1: Its yummy!- Greek yogurt is packed full of protein, probiotics, and good dairy your body needs. Here is one of my favorite recipes:

Cold Oats-
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup fat free vanilla greek yogurt
1/2 cup vanilla almond milk
Toppings of choice (cinnamon, honey, berries. etc)

-Mix oats, yogurt, and milk together in a storable jar or container (something with a lid)
-Add toppings
-Cover and leave in fridge overnight or at least 3 hours
-Enjoy!

Also, don’t forget that Greek yogurt is a great healthy substitute for mayonnaise when cooking. Instead of making your favorite dipping or topping sauce using mayo, use greek yogurt instead- you will not be able to tell the difference! Another great example is tuna. Sub out the mayo for Greek yogurt and you wont be disappointed!

Number 2: It’s healing!- OK, so we’re about to get personal and talk feminine issues. Yeast infections to be exact. They are something almost every girl has experienced, and it’s not comfortable. However, the good news is Greek yogurt is a natural remedy! Thats right! Greek yogurt contains healthy bacteria, cultures and organisms that when administered to the affected area using a safe applicator, can help heal your yeast infection!

Number 3: Its a face mask!- Greek yogurt is the easiest, most affordable addition to your skin care routine. It can be applied topically as a do-it-yourself face mask. Its packed with yummy nutrients for your skin such as:
zinc– which is anti-inflammatory, a natural astringent, and helps with acne
lactic acid– which is exfoliates and moisturizes dry skin
calcium– contains antioxidants
b vitamins– keep skin glowing and hydrated

Just apply an even layer of plain, fat containing (2% or higher) Greek yogurt to your face and neck for 20 minutes once a week! An easy way to achieve better skin!

So next time you’re browsing the aisles at the store, don’t forget to stock up on Greek yogurt. you wont regret it!

Beauty & Bellini’s: Our First Network Blogging Event

This past Sunday we closed down Facialworks for a wonderful and extremely fun event. Being in the skincare industry, we work with so many beauty and lifestyle bloggers. Not to mention, design, family, travel and just women with wonderful style who want to share their lives. So as a thank you, we wanted to invite them all for a day of pampering!

Mendocino Farms catered our event, and the food was nothing short of delicious. The two favorites were the Chilli Rubbed Chicken Skewers and the Curried Couscous.

We had two of our own estheticians Mallory and Natalie doing mini oxygen facials. For everyone who hadn’t had one yet, they were shocked by how amazing their skin felt. For our facial veterans, they were so happy to be able to come in give their skin some much-needed attention.

We invited Jessica from Sunless Rae to come in and do her custom organic airbrush tans and everyone left the party with a beautiful bohemian glow.

Veronica Fensel came in and set up a mini makeover station and glammed up as many girls as she could.

Whitney St. Clair from Blown Away Blow Out Bar in Laguna Niguel sent two of her gorgeous stylists Casey & Rachel to come do hair. The curls, braids and styles these girls did was nothing short of beautiful.

Beauty is pain right? Well on that note, we invited Lunch Box Waxing to come on over and assist with the less than glamorous part of our routines and the ladies left with the most perfectly shaped brows.

And last but not least, ET Chiropractic’s. Because who has ever said no to a massage?

Thank you to all of our vendors who contributed their services and to our wonderful staff who helped run the event!

xoxo,

Mallory Ashley

Welcome to our Blog

2013 Facial Works Opening-46Well the time has come. We have decided to Blog. Possibly Vlog. Our goal with this will be to introduce our brand, our products and ourselves! We will give you tips and tricks for proper skincare. Highlight new techniques and devices. Offer awareness on what ingredients to look for in your products and what to stay away from. There may be some recipes in here for good skin. Or some that just sound delicious. We want to expose our clients to our lives and our knowledge (don’t worry, there won’t be any politics here!) We love to travel so there is always a chance we will throw in a post about an amazing destination that we recommend!

But first, I want to introduce everyone to our gorgeous, kind and extremely smart owner. Facialworks is her first baby (she has a beautiful 1 year old and one on the way!) Her name is Meghan. She is the brains (and the beauty) behind all things Facialworks. Although not to take any credit away from her business partner/husband/man behind the woman Jason. These two make the perfect team! With Meghan’s knowledge of skincare, she has been a licensed esthetician for 8 years, and Jason’s a Business graduate from USC, they are uniquely qualified for the job. They pour their time and lives into keeping up with all things within the skincare industry.

As for our writers? We have decided to do this “family” style. All of our estheticians are excited to contribute! We will be introducing you to everyone over the course of the next few weeks!

So welcome and enjoy! If there’s anything anyone wants to know about, just leave a comment and we will gladly take the article request! Were here to help (and entertain :))
