Saunas: Good for healthy skin?

35346900 - sauna backgroudSaunas have always been promoted as a great way to detoxify your body and skin. But recently, there has been some reports that it is harmful to ones overall health. Lets weigh it out here!

PRO: Saunas relax, and distress you (yes please!) Stress, although some claim is invisible, is the ultimate enemy to overall health! Taking 30 minutes in a hot sauna can relax your mind, body (and soul) just melting your stress away!

CON: Overheating: The intense heat inside a sauna can raise your body temperature to unhealthy levels. Doctors recommend never to exceed 30 minutes!

PRO: Circulation! While you’re in the sauna, your pulse rate jumps by more than 30% allowing the heart to nearly double the amount of blood it pumps each minute (impressive!) And most of the extra blood flow is directed to your skin.

CON: The circulation is directed away from the vital organs. Additionally, although blood pressure changes vary by person, rising in some people but falling in others.

PRO: Saunas provide natural cleansing. The increased sweating is a simple acceleration of your body’s natural mechanism for getting rid of impurities.

CON: Over drying: Heat dries out your skin and your body’s natural reaction to dry skin? Create more oil. This can cause (is some) breakouts and/or dry patches.

Preventative: How to keep lines and wrinkles from forming!

46774837 - pretty woman checking her wrinklesThey say anything you did before 25 was a free pass. Ok that may be an exaggeration. But up until your mid twenties, your skin is in its prime! Under 25? Live it up! Over 25? Time to listen up!

As we age, the collagen and elastin decrease. Causes? Damage from the sun, pollutants, poor diet, smoking (please quit now!!!) and alcohol consumption (no champagne…how will we survive!?!). These all cause wrinkles and an uneven texture. Also starting in your early thirties, collagen production slows down and the type of collagen you produce is far less effective. The enzymes in your skin that are in charge of cleaning up damaged collagen fibers continue to breakdown old collagen. But the problem is that the new collagen fiber production can’t quite keep up. The result? Aging skin, fine lines, wrinkles and loss of tone (say it isn’t so!!!)

But were not just here to give you all bad news. We have some tips for you!

Protein Lack of protein ages the skin more visibly. We recommend eating an adequate amount of protein rich foods for getting the nutrients you need to produce new collagen fibers. The amino acids that make up proteins are what the fibers are made up of! So time to load up on fish, poultry, lean meats and eggs!

Vitamin C Next step? Converting the amino acids into a usable form of protein to make the collagen fibers. This is the job of a diet rich in vitamin C!

Antioxidants Fruits and veggies are important to protect your cells from free radical damage that leads to aging.

Stimulating Collagen How do we do that??? Vitamin C applied topically not only has a positive effect on collagen production, it also helps fade brown spots and pigmentation.

Chemical Peels A spotless, lineless, flawless complexion is lying just beneath the surface of your skin. During a peel, the acids lift away dead skin cells and trigger a reaction. Once the top layer begins to shed, signals are sent to the living cells below to multiply and move on up and begin increasing collagen production! A thorough sloughing also offers one very immediate upshot: smoother skin that’s both more radiant and more receptive. As for all the benefits of Chemical Peel’s, and the many different kinds, check back soon as we will go more in depth in another blog!

Summer Skin: 5 Tips for glowing skin

35915096 - long haired girl in bikini and straw hat on tropical caribbean beachIn Beautiful and Sunny Southern California, the heat has been on. It has reached the high 90’s these past few weeks and I don’t think I’ve seen a cloud in months!

Here are our 5 tips to look your best in the summer!

1. Exfoliation

Weather it’s right before a day in the harbor on your friends yacht or a relaxed backyard BBQ, exfoliating just before will give your skin a fresh look!

2. Moisturize

The best accessory to keep your skin hydrated? Moisturizer! Make sure to use one with SPF! And tinted or not, the choice is yours 🙂

3. Sunscreen

Don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours. And for women, don’t forget your neck and chest is as important as your face.

4. Brows

This is their time to shine! Sunlight exposes even the tiniest of hair and lights up the face. Keep them neat and tidy.

5. Makeup

Here is the magic 5: Tinted Moisturizer (with SPF), Brows, Mascara, Highlighter and Lip Gloss. Keep it light and bright.

Welcome to our Blog

2013 Facial Works Opening-46Well the time has come. We have decided to Blog. Possibly Vlog. Our goal with this will be to introduce our brand, our products and ourselves! We will give you tips and tricks for proper skincare. Highlight new techniques and devices. Offer awareness on what ingredients to look for in your products and what to stay away from. There may be some recipes in here for good skin. Or some that just sound delicious. We want to expose our clients to our lives and our knowledge (don’t worry, there won’t be any politics here!) We love to travel so there is always a chance we will throw in a post about an amazing destination that we recommend!

But first, I want to introduce everyone to our gorgeous, kind and extremely smart owner. Facialworks is her first baby (she has a beautiful 1 year old and one on the way!) Her name is Meghan. She is the brains (and the beauty) behind all things Facialworks. Although not to take any credit away from her business partner/husband/man behind the woman Jason. These two make the perfect team! With Meghan’s knowledge of skincare, she has been a licensed esthetician for 8 years, and Jason’s a Business graduate from USC, they are uniquely qualified for the job. They pour their time and lives into keeping up with all things within the skincare industry.

As for our writers? We have decided to do this “family” style. All of our estheticians are excited to contribute! We will be introducing you to everyone over the course of the next few weeks!

So welcome and enjoy! If there’s anything anyone wants to know about, just leave a comment and we will gladly take the article request! Were here to help (and entertain :))
